Life has been a total whirlwind lately!  I was uber-stressed with throwing my little sister's Bridal Shower, but it was a huge success and a super fun party.  (I, as usual, stressed about it at an unnecessarily high level, in typical Angela fashion).

On top of that, my grandmother underwent gall bladder removal surgery, which is kind of scary because she is 90 years old.  (Last rights were read and holy oils were administered).

Furthermore, my birthday is typically a sort-of stressful time of year.  In the past, I would have turned to food, but it seems that just doesn't "do" it for me anymore.  If anything, the more-stressful days had less on the menu.

I've been drinking too much soda, a lot of coffee (every cup has heavy whipping cream and ez sweetz because why not?), lots of sugar free raspberry lemonade.

Now, we are just gearing up for my better half's tonsil removal surgery, which happens on July 16th.  I'm not the best nurse ever, but I will do my best not to be a bitch.  Not kidding!

Bridal Shower photo op! My sweetie Angie is on the far left and I'm right next to her (with the diet coke in hand).  My super cute sister is next in line (the one with the gorgeous brunette hair). Followed by a cousin, my stepmom's mother and last but not least, my stepmom.

Me and little sister:

Me and the My Better Half at my cousin's wedding (I'm the one in the dress).

Still egg-fasting

We're going a little more lax with the eating while at my cousin's wedding, but we are still staying on plan as far as eating low carb goes.  This means that instead of eggs, we might eat a bunless burger or a couple sausage patties in lieu of some eggs for a meal or two.

- Two eggs with jalapeno mustard and mayo and lettuce
- Same thing as above, for lunch
- Cinnamon flax muffin with plenty of coconut oil (love it when it gets a little soft and squishy in the warmer weather... omg so yummy, almost like a super healthy frosting like consistency)

The gf has never lost so much weight -- so quickly, that is.  She is not as focused on the number as the result, but her shrinking waistline speaks for itself.  She has always been gorgeous, but she is getting to her naturally healthy weight and more importantly, a healthier version of herself.

We look at eating mostly eggs as a way to fast-track the low carb process.  Instead of taking back roads to weight loss, it's like taking the expressway. Why not, right?  It's easier on the wallet as well.

It was the gf's idea to "egg fast."  She is going under the knife on July 16th (tonsillectomy), so she wants to be as healthy as possible before anesthesia.

of her.  She is doing the dang thing.

The second feral kitty that we trapped turns out to be a male.  He was neutered on Monday.  The plan is to release him tomorrow, as long as it's not cold and rainy.

We caught another feral kitty!  The other one is spayed and we're keeping her for five to seven days until she can be released.  Turns out the place is not open 'til Monday, so we can take her in then to be fixed.  We caught another female in the live trap, which is good.  Two females in as many days!

We're going to Mom's house on Sunday to celebrate Mother's Day.  We got her an orchid, a Mother Theresa canvas and guardian angel necklace.  I know she will be tickled.

The gf got me some new clothes for Mother's Day too because she says fur babies do count and I'm a good mommy.  So yay!

My go-to muffin recipe and Tuesday's eats and our feral kitty

- Two fried eggs with lettuce, mayo and mustard
- Two cinnamon flax muffins with lots of butter
- Two eggs with lettuce, mayo & mustard

Here if the flax muffin recipe that I love to use.  I also add in 15 drops of ez sweetz (liquid splenda) and two extra eggs (and a little more cinnamon).  It makes the same amount of muffins, but it makes them a little fluffier and more substantial.

We captured the feral kitty!  Today's agenda is to have it spayed/neutered.  We are doing a TNR on it (which just means trap, neuter, release).  Feral cats live in colonies where they survive in the wild, kind of as a pack... but we want it to at least not have babies having babies if you know what I mean.  If you do a TNR on a cat, you have to be sure to drop it off to the same place or they won't know how to survive in a new location.

It's not an egg fast... It's our Egg Fest!

We are starting eggfest today!  The gf is having a tonsillectomy (in about ten weeks) and she wants to optimize her health before going under the knife. I'm so proud of her!

Today is our first day of "Egg Fest" and we are pumped!  There will be scrambled eggs, fried eggs, egg salad, deviled eggs, oopsies, maybe some cream cheese pancakes and lots of fun and weight loss to be had.

We will be eating eggs for every meal with a little lettuce, some flax muffins, butter, heavy whipping cream & cream cheese on our "acceptable" list.

My appointment with my knee surgeon went well.  I am about 2.5 weeks post-op (form hardware removal) and he said that I can start bearing more weight on my knee.  I'm supposed to let the pain be my guide.  If it's ouchie, I'm doing too much.

I don't have to go see him for another year, which is awesome!  It will just be a re-check at that point also.

Ketchup for a buck and good parking

- Roast beef with mayo & low carb ketchup
- The rest of the roast beef (sad face) with lotsa mayo & lc ketchup
- Cinnamon flax muffin with butter
- Two fried eggs with a hot dog, mayo, mustard and lc ketchup

We found the reduced sugar Heinz ketchup at our local Dollar Tree, so you know we scooped them all up.  Score!  They are typically close to 3 bucks apiece and we like ketchup on everything, sooo... I remember when I first started doing low carb (about 14 years ago!), low carb ketchup was unheard of.  It's nice to have a lc ketchup as good as Heinz, even when it's top dollar - it's worth it!

Still "on the mend" with my hardware removal knee operation.  Went by the DMV yesterday and got my three month handicapped parking permit.

Is it time to get out some of the spring clothes or what?  The gf saw a snowflake last night, so I'm almost afraid to ask.  We did haul our shovel down in the basement a couple weeks ago, however, in good faith....

Low carb menu & still loving my low carb oatmeal

- Low carb oatmeal with heavy cream, liquid splenda (ez sweetz) and sugar free Walden's pancake syrup
- Two eggs
- Cinnamon flax muffin with butter

Day three post-op and feeling better each day... :)  The ace bandage comes off today, which will be nice (and probably a little scary in a way for a non-nursey type).

I've said it before and I will say it again... This oatmeal is wonderful and nothing short of a low carb miracle in my book.  If you enjoyed oatmeal in carby days, then you will love this!   It's also jam-packed with fiber, which helped me out because we all know that surgery can wreak havoc on your digestive system. To clarify, I use a heaping 1/4 cup of the mix with 2/3 cup of boiling water plus a splash of heavy cream and plenty of sweetener.  It's total comfort food.

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

Low carb menu

- Two eggs
- Sugar free gelatin parfait
- Deviled egg with extra mayo & a cinnamon flax muffin with lots of butter

The surgery itself took less than half an hour, which is awesome.  They got right in there and took out my plate and screws out of my femur.

My surgery was at 9am and I was home by 1pm (I think).  I'm able to balance myself out by placing just a little weight on my ouchie leg and using a walker.  I was able to get up the steps by just putting my weight on my walker and hopping backward on my good leg, which was awesome.

The hardware removal took place on Monday and today, I'm really feeling better. I've been sooo tired today and I've been mostly just sleeping and working (web work), but the pain is really getting to be less intense, which is a huge relief!!  I think that I slept for about thirteen hours, which is very unlike me.  Must be my body healing and that new bone growth shooting in!

Gearing up for Monday...

- Two eggs
- Two cinnamon flax muffins with butter
- Two deviled eggs with extra mayo
- A few bites (each) of the chocolate pudding layer and the peanut butter creamy layers of Drumstick Treat

The gf is sick with very sore tonsils and she can only swallow cold, soft foods.  I made her little low carb, chocolate peanut buttery parfaits to help her through the sick misery!

Going in for surgery on Monday to get the hardware removed from my knee.  Sure, it's outpatient, but it's scary, darnit!   *scared*

Shortly after I recovery from my knee surgery, the girl is getting her tonsils removed.  Necessary evils, but we will both be more comfortable (and less ouchie) afterward.

Thank goodness for private health insurance, amazing surgeons who are good at what they do and work-from-home, make-our-own-schedule jobs.  Yeah, life is good... even when it's scary.

Nice day to be inside

- Two eggs
- Jello
- 2.5 whole deviled eggs with mayo
- Two cinnamon flax muffins with butter
- SF gelatin parfait

Seriously, I love eggs!  They are so incredibly versatile!  Last night, I made the gf some over-easy eggs and am just amazed at how healthy they are... and the many forms that they can take!  I've heard them called nature's perfectly packaged little protein and I could not agree more.

Still waiting to hear back from my doc on my pain meds.  Turns out, they are doing end-of-the year (in March?) drug screening so that is why I will have to go in.  I think they actually just make sure that the drug does show up in my system to make sure that I'm not just getting it Rx'd to me and selling it out on the street.

We got a huge amount of nasty, heavy snow, so I'm just gonna wait 'til tomorrow to make the hike.  The highway I take is kind of known for being super bad in bad weather, so probably best to stay home and it's probably not ready yet anyway.

Otherwise, work is busy and I'm just counting my blessings to be working from home in this treacherous Michigan winter.  How'd I get so lucky? :)

Low carb menu

- Two eggs
- SF jello
- 2.5 (whole) deviled eggs with extra mayo
- Sausage quiche with mayo

This sausage quiche is awesome.  While I'm an egg girl, it's the girlfriend's go-to breakfast, most every day of the week.  Every time I eat some, I'm surprised at how good it is. :)

I called in my pain meds today and the receptionist told me that I had to go in to pick it up.  I'm assuming I will have to do a drug test or the rules have changed on it because they can usually just call it in.  It's about an hour-drive each way, but it's a gorgeous day for a drive.

Other than that, just getting some work done and re-organizing (and re-contact-papering the below-the-sink bathroom cabinet, which has been a huge undertaking).

Skinny jeans, awesome lil sister & Jillian Michaels!

 Friday's Low Carb Eats:
- Two eggs
- SF jello
- Three cinnamon flax muffins with lots of butter
- Tuna salad

Saturday's Low Carb Eats
- Two eggs
- Roasted chicken leg quarter (without the skin because I was unsure of any possible high carb offendors)*
- A thick slice of roast beef, about the size of a deck of cards*
- SF jello
- Tuna salad

*I enjoyed these at my Grandma's 90th birthday celebration. Ang & I sat with my grandma's friends and
they were so amazing.  Those older women really tell it like it is, especially my grandma's friends! I was proudly sporting my size 6 jeans and tall black leather boots and feeling cute.

Been sleeping a lot lately because me and the gf have been sickie bear with colds, plus my knee has been a little ouchie.  I think it is the weather because everybody we know seems sick.

In fun news, I hung out with the little sister a few times last week!  She was home for Spring Break and "home" is with our dad, which is only an hour away.  I found a gorgeous bridesmaid dress.  I wasn't even going to try on any halter styles, but of course, my gf knows best! I tried it on and as soon as I came out, I felt pretty & confident and my gf immediately said, "That is the dress!" (and she was right!)

We also discussed her Bachelorette party, which I'm throwing as part of my Maid-of-Honor duties.  I feel like we're getting closer, which I really enjoy.  She is blossoming into her own woman and she is one cool chick.  I'm 12 years older than her and I guess she is considered a half-sister, but to me, she is just a regular sister.  Calling somebody a half-sibling seems weird.

Gearing up for a busy month!  We have two more birthday parties, a baby shower, a surgeon appointment, a dentist appointment & we are going to see Jillian Michaels.  This is a lot for us as we are typically home bodies.  Ang has always considered Jillian Michaels one of her life "pack leaders," so I knew that I had to scoop up tickets while I could when I heard she is coming to my Alma Mater. We are in the 9th row!

Unscrewing the screws

- Two eggs
- SF jello
- Two cinnamon flax muffins with butter
- Buttered broccoli
- Egg salad

Going to see my knee surgeon on March 19th.  Had a really, REALLY bad night with my knee where I could not even bend it to 90 degrees.  Felt like maybe the hardware was the problem.

I'm trying to keep a closer eye on my knee during the next month or so  and try to "feel" if the pain is in my hardware.  I know that I do have a great deal of knee pain and I think that the hardware removal might help to lessen the pain.  Only time will tell!

ETA: After reading some stuff online about it, I'm excited and actually looking forward to this surgery!  Most people experience a lot of relief and I think that he said it will be about six weeks recovery time... on a walker etc. Bring it on, baby!

I have even heard of people adding a 3T of cocoa powder to the cinnamon flax muffins, which I'm sure is quite lovely as well.

Eggies in the morning

- Cinnamon flax muffin with butter

From Finley's
- Burger patty with swiss cheese, lettuce, mayo, mustard and a little onion
- Cottage cheese
- Broccoli with butter

- Four eggs

I did not get my four eggs in the morning like I always do!  There is nothing quite like it... I mix up 1/4 cup of heavy cream with four eggs and scramble them with lots of coconut oil... Topped with some sugar free ketchup and it's a breakfast fit for a queen.  The dogs always get a little bite of Mommy's eggies, which they love.

We met my brother for lunch so I wanted to save my appetite for lunchtime.

Work is busy, busy, busy and life is good.

Even tow trucks can't get through...

- Four eggs
- Four eggs
- SF jello
- A few bites of meatloaf and egg salad

The gf finally made it home today!  She just stayed there because their roads don't get plowed and leaving would (and did) prove to be extremely difficult.

After over an hour of shoveling her own path down the road, she just pushed it off to the side of the road and walked up to a main road, where I came and rescued her.  With the windchill at a freezing cold five below zero, she was just ready to get home, take a hot shower and snuggle down with our dogs.  They were so happy to have her home, but not as happy as I am!

These are super nice homes, but for some reason, the roads never get plowed. I'm just glad she is safe and sound!

Her car is still on the side of the road. We do have AAA roadside assistance, but the lady told her that the tow trucks wouldn't be able to get down that road.  The lady advised her to call the police and to get to someplace safe.  Not exactly what you want to hear from Triple A, but she is home, so I am one relieved girl!

Edited to Add: She made it home safe and sound and they finally got her car out, too!

Addicted to Doggy Hugs!

I'm just waiting on the contractor to show up to re-drywall our ceiling in the dining room.  The gf is sleeping with our dogs.  Nobody in our pack sleeps very well when we are not under the same roof.

Went to the chiro last night and I'm feeling loads better.

Yesterday marks the one-year anniversary that I've been off the opiates.  Yes, I was prescribed them for my reconstructive knee surgery and they certainly have a time and place, but they are still very physically and emotionally addictive.  There is not a high without a low.  There is not an up without a down.

I weaned off of them myself then just got rid of them without looking back.  I was on them for seventeen months.  I usually quit stuff cold turkey, but with these suckers, I weaned.  I would recommend that method for anybody going through that sort of a thing.

Now, for most people, pain killers are a non-issue, but somebody who has a history of substance abuse needs to be careful.  I used to smoke so much pot that I couldn't even get high anymore.  I was doing about an ounce a week of the strong stuff.  I ate carbs 'til I passed out, sick, eating myself to a morbidly obese 306 lbs.  Alcohol was never really a problem for me, but I could see how it could quickly become one, based on my history.

I have all four wisdom teeth coming out on Friday, February 7th and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little afraid of "needing" the pain meds again.  But this is just one bad weekend, one bottle.  Nothing like last time when I had my femur sawed in two.

Addiction is a bitch and besides caffeine, I'm essentially habit-free.  Well, unless you count hugging on my dogs.  That is one addiction I refuse to give up.

Yesterday's Eats:
- Four eggs
- Two bacon-wrapped cheese-filled hot dogs with mayo & mustard
- SF jello

Gallons of mayo, construction & the Big Chill

- Four eggs
- Sugar free jello
- Tilapia parmesan with mayo
- More tilapia with lots of mayo (or was it mayo with tilapia?)

I never really liked mayo 'til I started going full-time low carb.  Now, I cannot get enough!  I know it's healthier to make your own, but the big ol' gallons from GFS are just really good and around 8 bucks a gallon.  Yes, we really go through that much mayo.

Tomorrow morning, we are getting our ceiling ripped out due to some rain damage.  Will be glad when it's complete.

We have two severe weather warnings now, one for windchill and one for the snowfall.

The gf is going to be gone for an overnight (pet sitting) visit tonight and I'm totally going to miss her.  How do the military wives do it?  Seriously?  She is going to take one dog and leave me with my gorgeous and somewhat snuggly Daisy dog, so I will be okay.  Gave her an aspirin this morning (vet-approved) due to her ouchie joints.

The house is just gonna be lonely without my boo.

Low carb menu and smaller clothes

- Four eggs
- Two hot dogs with cheese & a piece of bacon with mayo

Down to a size 8 jeans.  I wore a size 8 when I was in third grade.  No joke.  I wore a size 8 petite back then though because I was just a shortie. Always tall for my age but a third grader does not exactly fit into women's clothes because they aren't supposed to be that big yet.  I remember my grandma got me a pair of jeans that fit so well back then and that's what size they were. I loved those jeans.  Size 8P. Funny the stuff you remember.

I've never really loved clothes shopping because no matter your size, it can be tough to find clothes that flatter you. Especially when you're tall like me, but I actually am finally loving my height.  Even my size Large yoga pants are kind of hanging off my butt, but the Mediums fit me great.

I do like Old Navy.com because they have great deals and a wide variety of tall (and petite) for us non-cookie-cutter people. I had a coupon (this week only) for $40 off $100 order, so I scored two long-sleeved tees, two pairs of yoga pants and two pairs of jeans (one skinny and one boot cut) all for around $80.

Size 8, baby... Down from a size 28.  Oh, the wonders of eating low carb, I tell you. I also went from a very tight women's 3x shirt down to a size Medium top.  In some ways, I don't feel smaller than I was, but I know that I am.

Trying to keep warm today is at the top of my list.  Sitting with a space heater in my office because the heater in the basement is having trouble keeping the whole house warm and toasty.

We borrowed a movie from the library called "The Lucky One" that we started last night.  If we can get the living room warmed up enough, hopefully we will hang out in there and finish it up. It looks like a super cute movie! GF is a super good movie-picker-outer and she always seems to know all the movie stars names. How does she do that?

Low carb snacky snacks and why I love my chiropractor

- Four eggs
- Tilapia parmesan with buttered broccoli
- Chocolate mousse

We are going to see Her today, so that should be fun. I've taken to just sneaking in my own low carb snacks and enjoying the free refills on the diet soda.  My snacks sometimes include (but are not limited to) sunflower kernals, sugar free jello parfait and sometimes a flax muffin of some sort.  For me, it's mostly about having the snack there if I really want it, but lots of times, I will just skip it.

My knee has been kind of ouchie lately and I think that it has to do with  the new recumbent bike being a bit tougher to pedal (more resistance).  Living with an osteoarthritic joint is kind of a balancing act of figuring out what is enough exercise and not doing so much that you will be hurting for days. "Fighting through the pain" is not a good idea for a person with arthritis because too much can involve a couple days or even a week to ten days with dealing with more pain.

My surgeon hit the nail on the had when he said that you want to be active but not do so much that the next day, you couldn't do that much working out again.  Fortunately, I've started tracking my working out (which mostly just includes my back exercises at the gym and minutes on the bike) so I can easily see what works and what is too much.  However, I can fight through the pain all I want when I do my back exercises because that is actually what is required to get the one side of my back as muscular as the other one.  Getting my weaker side more muscular will be a lot of effort, but once it's done, it's done.  Just trying to enjoy the journey, as they say!

The iodine I'm taking has been a total life-changer!  My chiropractor is amazing for figuring this out.  I read that every single organ in your body needs iodine to function properly and I was extremely deficient.  I did notice that I was feeling more tired, plus my toes were turning purple and my menstrual cycle was a little wonky.  Something was just not "right" with my body and now, I feel way better!  My mood is better, my circulation is improving, on and on!

You had me at chocolate bark

- Four eggs
- Half of a piece of burger Florentine with lettuce, mayo, mustard & lettuce
- A piece of low carb chocolate bark (made using coconut oil, cocoa powder, liquid splenda & vanilla)
- Keto mousse

I came home from the gym to find a lovely little pan of chocolate bark waiting for me in the freezer that my amazing girlfriend whipped up as a surprise. We decided that next time, we will add a bit more sweetener (maybe four drops of liquid splenda), but it's quite lovely as-is and weighs in at about half a carb per piece.

We hit a big Kraft sale last night and got our favorite Oscar Meyer hot dogs for 99cents per pack!  Let's just say we may or may not have bought 32 packs of them... and our freezer may or may not be full.  Thank goodness for the deep freeze!

Also scored some bratwurst because I've been having some serious cravings for them as of late.

Scotcharoos, baby!

- Four eggs
- Parmesan-breaded pork chop with mayo
- Low carb chocolate mousse
- Scotcharoo

The mousse is nothing to write home about, but the scotcharoos are... very good.  We chopped them up and put them in the freezer.

To be fair, the mousse is really, REALLY high-fat and low carb, which is always good.  Maybe I will tweak it a little more.

How 2013 was different, from the burger girl herself!

- Four eggs
- Burger patty with lettuce, mayo, tomato slice, grilled mushrooms & a little onion

This past year, I've lost a little over 30 lbs (which brings the total weight loss up to 130 lbs and finally AT GOAL, yay!)

I've been pretty much perfectly on-plan for the entire year, which has made all the difference.  I've also adjusted my portion sizes, which hasn't been that tough because you need less to satisfy you when you're smaller.

I hadn't really planned to say on plan for the whole year, but after over a decade of eating low-carb, something clicked where going off plan is just not worth it and I prefer the way I feel when I'm eating healthy foods.

In short, eating like crap makes me feel like crap, so not eating the crap is the better way to go.

Oh, and I'm still loving my burgers.  That will never change. (Obviously.)

Low carb menu on New Year's Eve

- Four eggs
- Hot dog with lettuce & mayo
- A bite of bacon
- Some whipped cream

Went for an arterial flow test yesterday morning.  I had the test due to some cold and purple toes that I had (on the same leg  as my major knee surgery).  The test involved a bunch of blood pressure cuffs on each legs and even each big toe.

The ultrasound girl was really helpful and also looked like Alanis Morissette.  While she technically couldn't give me results, she basically told me in a round-about way that I seemed fine and that "no news is good news" if I don't hear from my primary doctor.

I asked for ways to improve my circulation and she said that basically being active and stretching is important.
